GPS OREGON 550 – Looking at the GPS OREGON 550, you would think that someone had handed over the previous version. It is so similar that at first we thought Garmin had just sent us the wrong unit. Why? Well it goes in almost the same rugged housing with the same 3-inch screen, and geocaches with ease. It’s powered by the same two AA batteries, has the same user interface and, well, almost the same in everyway possible. It’s not until you start to look closely you spot the differences. GPS OREGON 550 – The first and most important of these are around the back of the unit. Instead of worrying about carrying a digital camera you will find evidence of nab, Garmin has now added a 3.2-megapixel camera with digital zoom.

GPS OREGON 550

Accessed at the touch of a button you can take pictures of your geocaching or anything else for that matter, save and upload it later. Geotagged images are as you’d expect and a bit like Navman NavPix gradually decreased service, you can choose to directly navigate to the image using the included software on the device. GPS OREGON 550 In real terms however, this means that the GPS location information is stored in the EXIF of the image, which in turn means that when you share photos with services like Flickr or Panoramio you can find them on a map. OREGON 550T In use and the addition of a camera makes perfect sense: it is easy to use, and while the 4x digital zoom is not as useful (just think of digital zoom zoom in the image, not the object is a picture of) the fact the camera is good enough.

As for quality? It’s what you would expect from a 3.2-megapixel camera and while most geocachers have mobile phones with cameras built in, saving it frustrating to upload when you get back on your computer or download an image from your camera / phone to deal with the “I have completed this cache” log. GPS OREGON 550 – But it’s not only the camera that was added to try and persuade you to part with your money. OREGON 550T The screen, something we complained about the 400t is also improved. It is now clearer, which in turn means you can actually see when out and about in the field. When we say brighter, it’s not clear cell phone, but it’s still an improvement and definitely makes a difference. Direct sunlight still turn (Garmin need to Olympus to talk about creating non-reflective screens), but you do not need your coat to hide so much.

Other new features are difficult to spot, have doubled in 1000-2000 Waypoints and routes will be increased from 50 to 200.

So that’s the difference, but if you have not played with the 400t, 550t what is it anyway?

Robust is probably the best way to describe the design. It is certainly good enough to be dropped (we know, we’ve tried) with a hard rubber casing protects all but gubbins inside. Indented on the front is a 3-inch touchscreen display, while the on / off button, USB connector and the battery out to catch the only other design elements to highlight the flush.

The removal of the battery to catch unveils two AA batteries. The uptake of AA batteries instead of a purpose-built lithium-ion offer is welcomed as it means you do not need to find a diet – just perfect for your home or far from civilization. When it comes to controlling the GPS OREGON 550 is all using the touchscreen, not great if it’s cold as you will have the gloves off, but the screen is responsive. Functions are either listed six to a screen with the ability to scroll through them very much like the iPhone, or a list of top-down format.

OREGON 550T

Got my GPS OREGON 550 approximately a month ago and have been completely reinvigorated to go geocaching. No more route planning, reviewing logs and printing out all of the potential locations to visit. All GPX files on which are easily downloaded and updated (with premium membership). Order Garmin Oregon 550TScreen is still somewhat difficult to read in direct sunlight unless you have the backlight on fairly high which limits the batteries, but one observation I made the other day, it is nearly impossible to see with polarized sunglasses. I checked this out with my Vista C as well and it was still somewhat difficult with the glasses, but not as bad as the. Took it ATV riding last weekend and it was GREAT for that as well. OREGON 550T Topo’s really helped in the back woods and paths as well as the tagged pictures allowing for a quick Google Earch overlay of our route and pictures of the trip! Truely a unique way to record your trips! I would highly recommend if you are new to geocaching as it makes it so much easier, as well as for hiking and biking as you can keep your camera at home for basic pictures. But I would NOT recommend this if you are looking for a vehicle GPS. GPS OREGON 550  I love my Nuvi and am obviously a Garmin fan, but this one would miss the mark in a car.
